01
Anne
10

Buffy abandons her life as a slayer and tries to make a go as a waitress in a different city, but there are monsters there too.

It is hard to imagine a better show.  I have seen it 5 times.  Buffy is running from her identity but is forced by circumstance to come to terms with who she really is.  The final couple of scenes are heart wrenching.   The character of Lily is pathos incarnate.  I liked the parallel plot with the Buffy gang ineptly trying to fight vampires without Buffy.  It is good comic relief in an otherwise dramatic show.

02
Dead Man's Party
... Buffy tries to reintegrate into her life, but zombies spoil the party.

A big letdown from "Anne." I will give it a rating the next time I see it, but the episode has not been rerunning on broadcast TV.

03
Faith, Hope and Trick
10 A new slayer, Faith, comes to town, and this creates problems for Buffy.

With the two different opening sequences and the introduction of both Faith and Mr. Trick and the grand battle and the final surprise ending, this show has everything to like and nothing to dislike.

This is the episode that Joyce mentions that Buffy is an only child.  She thinks that it is a handicap for Buffy, and that maybe she failed Buffy in some way by not having more children.  Joyce always seems like the insecure person, always trying to do what is right but never quite living up to her own expectations.  Her expression "slayer pride parade" could be interpreted in all sorts of ways.

04
Beauty and the Beasts
8 Buffy and Willow worry that recent attacks could be caused by Oz or Angel.

This is actually a pretty good show, and the quotes from "Call of the Wild" at the beginning and the end give the show atmosphere.  The downside is that the character Pete is just too mean.  He is a cruel character and this didn't sit well with me.   The long battle at the end with Buffy, Pete, Oz and Angel is a good pay off.

05
Homecoming
9 Buffy and Cordelia compete against each other for homecoming queen.   Mr. Trick creates a contest to kill Buffy and Faith.

Surprisingly good mixture of action and comedy.

06
Band Candy
...

Cursed band candy makes the adults in Sunnydale act like teenagers.

It is too bad they are not airing this on broadcast TV.  It was a clever show.

Lover's Walk
10

Spike kidnaps Willow to do a love spell to win back Dru.

Spike the vampire romantic? The show starts with Spike being a lost pathetic soul, but by the end of the show everyone is confused about who they are and who they love, and Spike is the only one who knows who he is and what he needs to do.

This show also features the longest and funniest monologue of the whole series.  The only thing I didn't like is the way Spike threatened Willow but he immediately mellows out afterward, and Willow asserts herself for a change.

09
The Wish
8

Cordelia wishes that Buffy had never come to Sunnydale.

The first 17 minutes (counting commercials) is probably filler because it all about relationships and is BORING.  Then something clever happens.   Cordelia gets her wish.  Then ALL HELL BREAKS LOOSE.  Literally.  Be careful what you wish for because you might get it.   Comparisons to "It's a Wonderful Life" seem appropriate.

10
Amends (A Buffy Christmas)
9

Angel is haunted by the ghosts of his past.

Angel, part man, part vampire, considers himself beyond redemption and wants to die.  What happens at the end, on Christmas morning, to save Angel's life comes off as miraculous and touched my heart.

Again, comparisons to "It's a Wonderful Life" seem appropriate.  Again the gang is witty as ever.

11
Gingerbread
... Why they don't air some episodes on broadcast TV is beyond me.

I saw this show and liked it, but would like to see it again before I rate it.

12
Helpless (Eighteen)
6.5

Buffy loses her power to fight vampires.

I totally reject the premise that Giles would endanger Buffy as part of a rite of passage on her 18nth birthday.  One could make excuses for Giles being bound by tradition or the Watchers Council but it seems totally out of charcter for him.  Either that or the English are stupid.  Anyone with half a brain wouldn't put a young woman in terrible peril.   Only mere chance prevents Buffy from dying.

Having said that, what does happen is interesting and suspensful.  Buffy has to deal with vampires without her usual strength, and she proves that she has brains too.

Despite the bad premise, the show proves witty throughout.  I just find the premise hard to forgive.

The ending provides some reconcilliation between Buffy, the gang, and Giles, and introduces a new premise for the rest of the season.  Giles reaffirms his position as a father figure for Buffy, whose real father is too busy to show up for her 18nth birthday.  The title also refers to how Buffy feels about her relationship with her father.

Dopplegangland
10 This show is really a sequel to "The Wish" and like that episode, something totally unexpected happens about a quarter of the way into it, with much funnier results.  Anya returns and will become a much more important character later.
