5 perfect translations of classic arcade games comes to Gameboy Advance.   Not all of them, however, play well on this platform.  Here is each game in more detail ....

  1. Ms. Pacman
This is the best reason to buy this cartridge.   Ms. Pacman is one of my all time favorite arcade games, and playing the Gameboy adaptation of it feels almost like playing the arcade game.   The only problem is that the joypad is more awkward than a joystick to make turns with.   The game is still playable but I find myself wishing for a joystick.

The game has two modes: Full screen where you can see the entire board on the Gameboy Advance Screen, and scroll mode where everything is larger but you don't see the entire board at one time.   I find myself preferring the scroll mode and I don't think that it detracts seriously from the game.

  2. Dig Dug
This is another great adaptation of a classic arcade game, but this game is somewhat repetitive.   The goal is to blow up enemies, over and again.   I am sure that 13 year old boys will find this to be great fun, but we adults expect our entertainment to be a little more sophisticated.   The funny thing is that I used to love this arcade game in the 1980's.

The game only uses scroll mode.

  3. Galaga
Perfect adaptation of the absolutely great arcade game, but on a really small screen everything looks too tiny.   I would have preferred larger graphics at the cost of not being exactly like the arcade game.

I would love to have the ability hook this up to a TV set, and maybe they will offer an adapter like they did with the Gameboy Color.   With a larger screen this game alone would be worth the purchase price.

  4. Galaxian
Ditto to the comments about Galaga above

  5. Pole Position
Pole Position looks absolutely terrific and seems to maximize the graphics capabilities of the Gameboy Advance.   It is also a near perfect adaptation of the arcade game.

This is possibly the worst game of the bunch.   The problem is that the original arcade game used a steering wheel, and this version is way over sensitive on the joypad controls to the point of being unplayable.   Perhaps with hours or practice I could learn to control this game.   It does make use of the left and right top buttons to assist in the control.
